A Truck Photographer's Diary - Photo Books

Truck Photo Books

Inspired by his mother who took photos of his Dad's trucks in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dave began photographing trucks in the late 1950s using a Brownie Hawkeye Camera. He continues that passion today.

Book 039
Colorado 5 – 1960s
A Truck Photographer’s Diary
Author and Editor: David A. Bontrager
Photography by Neil Sherff
Publisher: DABble Publishing & Imaging
As with all of our books, this book is printed and bound by a professional printer
Softcover, 80 Pages

  • This book features photos of trucks taken in Colorado in the 1960s.
  • In the 1960s Coors Brewery was still named Adolph Coors Company.  A lot of the trucks hauling for Coors at that time were leased to the brewery.  The two biggest lease operators were Walter B. Cosper Trucking of Golden, Colorado and Contract Carriers of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Wright Motor Lines of Rocky Ford, Colorado also had a number of trucks leased to Coors, but not as many as Cosper and Contract Carriers.  Many of the trucks hauling for Coors were owned by Coors Distributors.  Coors Brewery did not establish Coors Transportation until the 1970s.
  • Ringsby Truck Lines of Denver, Colorado had the Refrigerated Division that was comprised entirely of owner-operators.  This photo album includes some of those trucks.
  • The remainder of the album includes Wright Motor Lines, Colonial & Pacific Freightways, J. A. Sharoff and Co., City Market, Safeway Foods, Gates Rubber Co., and others.
  • The photo album is a great archive of vintage trucks.  All photos were taken in the working environment of the trucks.  The trucking industry is a constantly changing arena, and when trucking history is gone, it’s gone forever.  Without photos like these we would not have any history of trucking.
  • The 80-page book has 77 photos including a photo on the rear cover.
  • All of the photos are black and white.  Black and white photography has always been the artistic medium, and this photo album is a tribute to that medium of photography.
  • This is a great coffee table book.

About The Author

Dave’s mother took photos of his dad’s trucks in the 1940s and 1950s and is the one responsible for Dave’s interest in truck photography.  As a boy, Dave began photographing trucks in the mid-1950s, and also collected photos from trucking companies.  Over the years Dave learned to know many people who collected truck photos, and many of these acquaintances sent him photos.  Dave of course is quite a historian on the trucking industry and the trucks.  Dave’s passion for truck photography continues today.  He is now retired and lives with his wife Anna near Elnora, Indiana.

About The Photographer

Neil Sherff began photographing trucks in the late-1950s and is well known for his truck photos.  During the 1950s and through the 1960s he shot black and white photos, which was very common for that era.  Neil has always used medium format photography, beginning with 127 film, then moving to 120 film.  He continues to photograph trucks today, but on a more limited basis.  Many thanks to Neil for his efforts in truck photography.
