Fatjack's is now offering reprints of a select group of photographs from David A. Bontrager's private collection (the collection is in excess of 50,000 images) for others to enjoy. These historical and collectible photos of vintage antique trucks would be nice additions to a collection of trucking memorabilia. The photos would be ideal in an office, den, hobby room, or would even add a touch of nostalgia to a diner. The photo is imprinted at the bottom with David's name, and at the request of the buyer, David will hand sign the photo.

220 Cummins Emeryville bull hauler. The original photograph was taken in 1964 along Highway 96 west of Pueblo , Colorado . The bull hauler is driving an Emeryville powered by a 220 Cummins, and pulling a long gentle grade. Veteran truckers will immediately understand the title of the photograph, but perhaps the younger ones would appreciate an explanation. The famous 220 hp. Cummins was a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) engine, and when equipped with a rear dump manifold had a very unique popping sound due to the rear cylinder being next to the outlet of the manifold. When pulling hard the 220 could lay down quite a trail of smoke. There was an old saying, "You can see a 220 before you can hear it!" Many believe that the 220 Cummins inspired some of the lyrics in Dave Dudley’s song, "Six Days on the Road" when he sang, "There's a flame from 'er stack, and that smoke's a blowin' black as coal." However, certain Mack owners of the day would disagree, as the Mack engine was well known for a nice orange flame from the stack at night! That argument never has been entirely settled! The technical aspects of the photograph are also unique. It was purposely taken on the shadow side of the truck, thus the side of the truck is very dark, without much detail. The front of the tractor is highlighted by the sharp angle of the early morning sun, and the smoke is highlighted from backlighting, with the distant Sangre De Cristo Mountains providing a beautiful background. Title of photograph is "Class Act" taken in 1965 at Fortmeyers TruckStop, Fort Wayne, IN. The photo is an impressive image of a classic Emeryville leased to Midwest Coast Transport, Sioux Falls , SD. The title has dual meaning; the early to mid-60s, Emeryville was considered by many truckers of the era to be a class act among trucks, and many owner-operators of the era also considered Midwest Coast Transport a class act among companies. The Emeryville is painted the traditional Midwest Coast green and black, trimmed with a white stripe. Notice the location of the air horn mounted above the driver's door. This was common on Internationals in the 50s, but not too common on the late Emeryvilles. Photographer - David Bontrager

Rio Grande Motor Way, Inc. was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and offered overnight delivery of LTL freight throughout the state of Colorado . They also offered service to Northern New Mexico, Utah, and parts of Wyoming. Rio Grande Industries, parent company of both the D&RGW Railroad and RGMW, shut down Motorway in the early 1980s. Rio Grande Motor Way operated mostly LT Mack and conventional and cabover daycab Peterbilt road tractors, and also numerous G-Model Mack tractors with large dromes as shown in this photo taken in 1964 in Pueblo, CO. Cabover Kenworth, Greyhound Van Lines lease operator. While it may not earn an award at a truck show today, in 1965 this "tidy" well-kept cabover Kenworth was quite a truck. Long wheelbase, Peterbilt--Ringsby Truck Lines, Denver, CO operated a large refrigerated division comprised of owner-operators leased to the company. The refrigerated division operated into the 55' states, but with the long wheelbase this Pete has, it was captive to the western states with longer length laws. The American trailer has an underslung (belly-mount) reefer unit, and is loading meat at Pepper Packing Co. in Denver. YELLOW TRANSIT - predecessor to Yellow Freight System. Gateway Transport Co., Kendallville Indiana Relay. The lineup of White road tractors is at the relay point on U.S. Highway 6 at Kendallville, IN in 1961. Inter-State Motor Freight System was based out of Grand Rapids , Michigan , and later became Interstate System, along with a new logo. Navajo Freight Lines conventional tractor pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Due to the length laws the cabovers ran east and the conventionals ran west. The tractor in the foreground is an International Westcoaster. The hoods of other tractors in the lineup include an Autocar, Diamond T with both types of grilles, and a Kenworth. On the right side of the photo is my dad, A. G. Bontrager, leaning up against his all-time favorite truck, a cabover GMC. He also owned the Dodge truck. The photo was taken in California in the early fifties, approximately 1952-1953. Trucking from Indiana to California back in those days was quite a job, but Dad loved it. Often times he would stay on the West Coast for a month at a time and haul cars up and down Highway 99. He always said that he wanted to move to California, but never did. As time went on, he made his last trip to California in the late sixties and said again that he wanted to move to California, but never went back before he had his first stroke in the late eighties, and passed away in 1999. Lesson learned is that if we don’t follow our dreams, they simply won’t happen. Needless to say, this photo has a lot of nostalgic value for me. The original simply wasn’t that good of a photo, but I still treasure it.
